About the Pantoum
This poetry form came to Europe via France from what is
now present day Malaysia.
The pantoum is written as a series of quatrains (four line
stanzas). A unique feature of the form is the repetition of
lines according to a fixed plan.
Rhyme is optional but can be quite effective. This is of
course subject to the usual caveat that the rhyme should
be almost ‘invisible’ to the reader.
Several different models can be found. I particularly like
the symmetry of a three stanza pantoum with all lines
given twice.
